This is the view from my apartment.
Looking out the window in my living room, there’s a cemetery across the street. Most people would be creeped out by the idea of living so close to a graveyard, but I think it’s pretty awesome.
Studies have shown that people who think about death and mortality on a regular basis live happier lives. There are a number of possible reasons:
- Our brains are wired to “cope” with traumatic feelings (like the thought of death) by triggering happier memories and thoughts.
- Introspection allows us to examine who we are and what’s really important to us, and equips us to make better decisions.
- Thinking about the brevity of life inspires us to make the most of it, and seize opportunities.
Plus, it’s nice and quiet, which is nice. At least until the zombie apocalypse begins, in which case there’s a shotgun in my closet.
